Straying Opposition Realignment and the Pragmatism of Politics

The Failure of Realignment Evidenced by Low Approval for the Centrist Reform Alliance

I read reports indicating that approval ratings for the Centrist Reform Alliance remain low, leaving the party submerged within the opposition landscape. Given that its predecessor parties, the Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP) and Komeito, enjoy higher support individually, the merger appears to have yielded no positive synergy, making it safe to conclude that the decision was a fatal misstep.

At the time of the merger, I hoped to see the birth of a pragmatic opposition party capable of truly confronting the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). However, because the merger was rushed right before an election, neither the supporters nor the affiliated lawmakers themselves seemed to grasp what the party actually stood for, reducing it to mere fringe political status.

The Dilemma of Expansion: Ideological Purity vs. Pragmatic Realism

When aiming to expand political influence, party leaders face a strategic dilemma: whether to focus on core supporters by promoting ideologically purified policies, or to attract new voters through mild, pragmatic positioning.

Personally, favoring moderate and pragmatic political entities, I did not dislike the approach chosen by the Centrist Reform Alliance. However, witnessing how both supporters and lawmakers shattered into disarray, pursuing ideological differentiation from the ruling party might have ultimately served the original parties better.

Given that Komeito once went so far as to brand their counterparts as "sworn enemies of the faith," the sudden pre-election merger undoubtedly caused severe cognitive dissonance among traditional CDP supporters. Many supporters and legislators were simply unprepared to accept the policy shifts that accompanied the integration.

While party leadership leveraged the external pressure of a sudden parliamentary dissolution to force through policy changes and the merger at a stroke, the ideal course would have been to exhaust internal debate, building genuine momentum among supporters and politicians alike. Yet, whether the party possessed the organizational capacity to achieve such consensus remains highly questionable.

Obsession with Power and the Need for Internal Opposition Reform

The LDP is enviable in that both its supporters and politicians share a firm consensus on exhausting all available means to secure a parliamentary majority and exercise state power. Conversely, the opposition often appears content to remain small, clinging defensively to its core support base to maintain the status quo.

The leadership likely opted for the merger into the Centrist Reform Alliance as a gamble to alter this stagnant reality, but ultimately failed to bring anyone along with them.

If a party genuinely seeks to improve the nation, it must secure a majority. To accomplish that, there ought to be active internal movements advocating for the necessary shifts in policy and electoral strategy from within.

- YouTube

AI Proofreading and the Pursuit of Truly Human Writing

Mr. Takeshita's Insight and My Perspective as an In-House Patent Attorney

I recently took a quick look at a video that was trending on social media. - YouTube

Mr. Takeshita pointed out that writing criticized by AI for lacking logical connection is actually a uniquely human trait and a strength, which I found remarkably insightful.

As an in-house patent attorney, I frequently draft patent documents and internal communications. When I run them through AI checks, I often receive various critiques—such as overgeneralization or imprecise descriptions.

However, these phrasing choices are often the deliberate result of careful strategy on my part, so having a machine flag them as flaws feels frustrating. Behind every seemingly unnatural sentence, there is a clear intention.

For instance, if you want to broaden the scope of patent rights as much as possible while avoiding overlap with similar prior art, the wording might naturally become roundabout. Similarly, there are many cases where simplifying an explanation to make it easily understandable is far more effective than clinging to absolute precision.

The Essence of Business Writing and Necessary Adaptations in the AI Era

I believe that the essence of effective business writing lies in crafting text with enough momentum to make readers readily overlook inherent unnaturalness or minor flaws. However, unlike times when our audience was exclusively human, AI tools—which favor natural and precise prose—now inspect human-written text. As a result, relying solely on rhetorical momentum is no longer enough to fool them, and our writing strategies must adapt. We will likely need to scatter more supporting rationale throughout our writing to counter AI critiques when they arise.

According to media reports, workload has actually increased with the adoption of AI. I suspect one reason for this is that we now live in a world where AI can constantly pick flaws in human deliverables, thereby raising the standard expected of our work.

Finding the Right Distance from AI

One might wonder if we should simply delegate the entire writing process to AI rather than using it merely for proofreading. Regrettably, that is not a viable option at present, which is quite frustrating. AI-generated text often fails to convey what we truly wish to communicate in a direct manner. There appears to be a fundamental disconnect between text preferred by machines and text preferred by humans. Human readers, even if logical consistency or precision is slightly lacking, often prefer text that gets straight to the point. While taking precautions against AI nitpicking, I still want to stay committed to writing compelling, high-momentum prose that human readers can absorb seamlessly without experiencing cognitive overload.

The aforementioned video introduced a writing technique where one lets AI generate a draft first, only to write a completely different piece by human hands while referencing it. For now, maintaining that kind of healthy distance between AI and humans in draft writing might be the most effective approach.

Making Pork Kakuni with Plenty of Kikumasamune Sake in a Hot Cook

Making Pork Kakuni with Kikumasamune Josen Kimoto Junmai-shu

I made pork kakuni using a generous amount of Kikumasamune Josen Kimoto Junmai-shu, a boxed sake from Kikumasamune, in Sharp's Hot Cook, a kitchen appliance. I haven't tasted it yet, but I used a generous 500 milliliters of sake, so I think it will turn out delicious.

I originally bought the Kikumasamune sake for drinking, but it didn't really suit my taste, so I decided to use it for cooking instead. Kikumasamune is a major sake producer, so it offers a wide variety of Japanese sake. I've tried several of them, and I've come to realize that even sake from the same producer can taste quite different, with a big difference between the ones I like and the ones I don't.

Classic and Modern Japanese Sake

I'm not an expert, so I can't properly identify the different types of sake. But, very broadly speaking, among Kikumasamune's boxed sake, I feel that I tend not to like many of the classical brands that have been loved for many years, while I tend to like many of the more modern brands that follow recent trends.

Josen Kimoto Junmai-shu looks like a classic brand just from its packaging, and it has a strong, rich flavor. To be honest, I found it a little too distinctive for my taste.

Even among Kikumasamune's junmai sake, a product called Kinpak has a sweet aroma and flavor, making it easy to drink. It seems to be a more modern type that was developed relatively recently. For someone new to Japanese sake, I think newer products that reflect recent trends may simply taste better.

The Exception: Josen Junmai Taru-shu

The exception is Josen Junmai Taru-shu. Since it is a best-selling product, I assume it is a classic sake, but perhaps because of the aroma of Japanese cedar, I find it refreshing and much easier to drink than Josen Kimoto Junmai-shu.

I find it quite enjoyable to drink, and I still have some in my refrigerator that I'm drinking now.

Kikumasamune also has a regular-sake version of its taru-shu. Both versions seem to be frequently featured and highly rated on YouTube channels that introduce Japanese sake. I also find the regular-sake version delicious. Since the regular sake comes in a paper carton, I also appreciate the fact that it is less of a hassle to dispose of.

The exception is Josen Junmai Taru-shu.
Since it is a best-selling product, I assume it is a classic sake.
But perhaps because of the aroma of Japanese cedar, I find it refreshing and much easier to drink than Josen Kimoto Junmai-shu.

Toward an Inclusive Society: Cognitive Challenges and the Future Opened by Technology

People live in various circumstances. As I go about my daily life, I often find myself hoping for a society where people in difficult situations—such as those with intellectual disabilities or those struggling with poverty—can live a peaceful and enjoyable life.

These issues are often perceived as "stories from a special world that have nothing to do with us," but looking closely at actual data and reality reveals that they are by no means irrelevant to any of us.

The Surprisingly Close Reality of "Cognitive Handicaps"

While the proportion of individuals with general intellectual disabilities (IQ below 70) is said to be around 2% to 3% of the total population, if we include "borderline intellectual functioning" (IQ roughly 70–84), about 15% of the population—roughly 1 in 7 people, or nearly 10% to 20%—are born with intellectual handicaps or difficulties in daily living.

Furthermore, there is the issue of aging. The prevalence rate of dementia among seniors aged 65 and older is approximately 15% (about 1 in 7 people, in the mid-10% range). When Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is included, about 30% of older adults—or 1 in 3—experience some form of cognitive challenge.

In short, 10% to 20% of people are born with developmental handicaps, and nearly 30% face cognitive decline if they live long enough. Combining these figures makes it clear that cognitive challenges are a "deeply personal topic for everyone," and there is an exceptionally high probability that we ourselves, our loved ones, or people close to us will be directly affected.

Toward a Future Where AI and Emerging Technologies Play a "Complementary" Role

So, how should we confront this reality? While expanding social welfare systems and public support is indispensable, we should also place great expectations on "technological compensation" in the coming era.

Emerging technologies, including AI, which has advanced dramatically in recent years, should not exist merely to streamline tasks or enhance convenience.

  • Support that breaks down complex text and procedures to match an individual's level of understanding
  • Development of real-time tools to support declining judgment or memory loss
  • Interfaces that bridge individual skill gaps and naturally assist with daily difficulties

If an approach that "complements human vulnerabilities and age-related decline through technology" advances, many people will be able to lead enjoyable and independent lives at their own pace, regardless of whether they have disabilities or their age.

Conclusion

Nobody is perfect, and as we age, the things we cannot do inevitably increase. Rather than brushing this off as "personal responsibility" or "a lack of individual effort," we must construct a framework where social systems and technology naturally cover these gaps.

I sincerely hope that technological developments, particularly in AI, will serve as a powerful driving force toward realizing an "inclusive society where no one is left behind and everyone is treated with kindness."

On the Final Chapter of "How to Grill Our Love": The Comfort of Slice-of-Life Manga and a Small Thought on Happiness

The manga series How to Grill Our Love (Yaiteru Futari), serialized in Weekly Morning, came to an end after roughly six years of publication. Having read it all this time, I feel deeply moved.

It is a heartwarming, episodic story about a close young newlywed couple who deepen their bond and connect with those around them through cooking. It was a relaxed read that I could comfortably enjoy every week.

In the first chapter, two people who met through matchmaking decide to get married with zero dating experience when the husband gets transferred from Tokyo to Hamamatsu. Eventually, the wife leaves her job to go independent and moves to Hamamatsu to live together. However, since they get married in chapter 1 and only start living together in chapter 32, the story progresses at quite a slow pace. Their relationship stays great all the way to the final chapter, and they build good relationships with everyone around them. Without any dramatic turns, it is a work that thoughtfully depicts a quiet daily life.

So it is not the kind of story that leaves you deeply shaken, but it was a comforting manga that guaranteed a pleasant feeling after reading. Losing one of my weekly routines of enjoying a story like this leaves a bit of a lonely feeling.

Although How to Grill Our Love has finished, there are other slice-of-life manga I enjoy reading, such as Robo no Fujii and Imoto wa Shitteiru.

When I was a kid, I enjoyed stories like those in Shonen Jump where heroes play an active role. But as you get older, you realize that you won't become a hero, and that you can be happy just by making your ordinary days fulfilling. Once you understand that, stories that quietly portray sweet, everyday moments really start to touch your heart.

What "The Suberi Dream Match" on Suiyobi no Downtown Taught Me About Environment and Success

A Chemical Reaction of Humor: Teaming Up with Top Comedians

A recent segment on Suiyobi no Downtown (Wednesday's Downtown) titled "The Suberi Dream Match" was truly outstanding. The premise was simple yet brilliant: comedians generally perceived as "unfunny"—such as top contenders from the "Suberi-One Grand Prix," a contest determining the least funny comedian—paired up with top-tier comedians active on television to perform original manzai or sketch comedy routines.

When I had seen the "unfunny" comedians on Suiyobi no Downtown in the past, I honestly couldn't see the humor in their acts. However, this time, by teaming up with top-tier talent, their performances became remarkably entertaining.

The Power of Environment and a Caution Against Overconfidence

It was deeply enlightening to realize that even individuals who struggle to succeed on their own can experience a dramatic turnaround with the right support from those around them. On a positive note, it demonstrates that anyone has the potential to thrive depending on their environment. Conversely, it serves as a subtle reminder that even when we appear to be succeeding, it may not be solely due to our own capability, but rather because those around us have laid the groundwork—a caution against becoming self-important.

That said, I found myself empathizing strongly with the struggling comedians. Therefore, I prefer to view this program as an encouraging example: even if someone cannot achieve results alone, as long as they dedicate themselves wholeheartedly, proper support from others can lead to high achievement.

Building Social Frameworks That Leave No One Behind

Unlike a television show setup, in real society, top performers rarely provide one-on-one mentorship to those who struggle. Nevertheless, I cannot help but dream of a world where, by designing effective frameworks, we build an inclusive society that leaves no one behind. Naturally, providing support requires time and effort. Yet, rather than abandoning those who face difficulties, encouraging them to unlock their potential through support feels like a far better way to reduce overall misfortune in society.

Reviewing the Movie Chef: A Lighthearted and Heartwarming Success Story

I recently watched the movie Chef (Japanese title: Chef: Mitsuboshi Food Truck Hajimemashita) on Amazon Prime Video.

The story follows a famous chef who, after being fired from his restaurant, starts a food truck business and pieces back together his bonds with his family. The original English title seems to be just Chef, so the mention of "three-star" in the Japanese title feels like an afterthought. There was no scene where he actually received a three-star rating (either in his previous restaurant or with the food truck), making the Japanese title seem rather arbitrary.

Once he gets fired at the beginning, the business takes off smoothly, and his relationships with his ex-wife and his somewhat estranged son improve rapidly. As a result, there are no uncomfortable scenes to watch, making it a casual and easygoing piece. The dishes featured look absolutely delicious, which adds to the enjoyment.

On the other hand, to be completely honest, a few points bothered me. I wondered if a newly opened food truck could constantly attract lines of customers just because a social media post went viral, or if the reconciliation with his ex-wife felt a bit abrupt since the catalyst wasn't very clear. I also questioned whether finding a patron to help him open his own restaurant could really happen that easily.

Even so, it is certainly not a movie you would regret watching, and it is a title I would easily recommend to others if asked for a review.

Vocabulary Notes

    • Example: The balcony felt like an afterthought rather than part of the original house design.
    • Example: The decision to close the park early seemed completely arbitrary.
    • Example: Her online clothing business really took off during the pandemic.
    • Example: He tried to reconnect with his estranged daughter after many years.
    • Example: The video of the dancing cat went viral within a few hours.
    • Example: The couple reached a reconciliation after counseling.
    • Example: The meeting came to an abrupt end when the power went out.
    • Example: The new CEO's speech acted as a catalyst for major company reforms.
    • Example: The artist was able to travel to Europe thanks to a wealthy patron.

Reflections on War News: International Order, Defense Capabilities, and Japan's Position

I saw the news that Ukraine destroyed a logistics hub of a major e-commerce company using drones. In Japan, it might be akin to bombing a distribution warehouse of Rakuten or Askul. Since it affects Russian citizens, if it can provoke anti-war sentiments in Russia, it might bring us closer to an end to the war that favors Ukraine.

In this war, I cannot help but side with Ukraine. Russia is invading Ukraine, so it is only natural for Ukraine to fight back. Also, though it may be a self-serving reason, it is desirable for the world to maintain an order based on democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. I would rather not see the growing influence of authoritarians like Putin who seek to destroy that order.

Ukraine's Military Gains and the Complex Emotions Behind Them

Consequently, I cannot deny that I favorably receive news of Ukraine's military successes, not just in this specific instance. However, many people are dying or being injured in the background, and I also feel it is inappropriate to rejoice as if watching a sports match.

Furthermore, particularly in this case, Ukraine attacked a civilian facility directly related to everyday life. Although I lack detailed knowledge, it might potentially be fraught with issues from the perspective of international law or ethics.

While Russia is engaging in despicable behavior by deliberately targeting civilians to undermine Ukraine's will to resist, making it disproportionate to demand high ethical standards from Ukraine alone, I still harbor a desire for a world where international rules are respected.

Double Standards and the Shaking Global Order

This Russia-Ukraine war is severely disrupting global order, but apart from that, Israel's invasion of Gaza was also appalling. Israel is problematic, but what about the United States assisting them? It goes against humanity.

That said, Japan, which cannot stand up to the US under the Trump administration, might also be seen by the Global South as part of the side disrupting the world order. Europe, too, particularly centered around Germany, has been somewhat lenient toward Israel.

Since countries act to protect their own interests, it is probably common anywhere to turn a blind eye to rule-breaking if it serves their national interests.

However, invading other countries and massacring civilians are absolute taboos. I want us to be able to adhere to principles and say "NO" to such acts.

The "Power" to Protect Rules and Perspectives on Defense Strengthening

Since both Japan and Europe rely on the US for defense, they cannot say "NO" to the US, nor can they confront Russia alone. Therefore, I believe that strengthening our own defense capabilities is the right course of action.

In Japan, many liberals and leftists who emphasize international rules are critical of a defense buildup. However, I feel that neglecting to possess the real power to confront those who try to break the rules has invited the current situation.

Finally, I have some hope that after the Trump administration, which disregards rules, is replaced, the US will become a bit more respectful of rules. I don't think the American public is necessarily uniformly accommodating toward Russia or Israel as it is now.

Somehow, my thoughts didn't come together well, resulting in a scattered text, so I will end it here.

Thoughts of an Android User in an Era of $700+ Smartphones

Word has it that even Apple's budget smartphone models will now exceed 100,000 yen. Since Google’s budget models also cross this threshold, Apple isn't uniquely expensive in that regard. However, because Android offers far more affordable alternatives, the high price tag of the iPhone certainly stands out.

As a die-hard Android user, I am not intimately familiar with iPhones. Nevertheless, I suspect that only a fraction of iPhone users utilize their devices to their full potential, and many would likely be perfectly satisfied with a reasonably priced Android model.

OS Market Share and the "Lock-in" Effect on the Youth

Although Japan remains a stronghold for iPhone users, I find myself wishing this recent price hike might nudge more people toward the Android ecosystem. As a middle-aged professional, I don't personally feel marginalized by my choice of operating system. However, I hear that younger generations and children using Android sometimes face hurdles when sharing files or messages because they lack access to iPhone-exclusive features.

It makes perfect business sense for Apple to leverage its proprietary applications to lock in users. Even so, it is disheartening to see Android users left out. I hope that a growing Android user base will encourage a shift toward cross-platform applications becoming the standard.

Currently, Xiaomi and Motorola offer some of the best value for money in the Android market. For those who prefer domestic brands, Sharp or Sony are solid choices, while Google remains the go-to option for the ultimate, pure Android experience.

Budget-friendly brands like Xiaomi even offer entry-level models around 20,000 yen. While their performance is modest, they are likely adequate for daily messaging and casual news reading. On the other hand, a mid-range model priced around 70,000 yen delivers a highly capable and seamless experience.

Looking Back on 'Supergirl': The Challenge of Empathy in a Crowded Cast

The Perfect One-Year Gap Between Installments

I went to see the movie "Supergirl." My reason was simple: I had watched the previous film, "Superman," and thoroughly enjoyed it. Since "Superman" was released in July 2025, the sequel came out exactly one year later. With this kind of interval, the memory of the previous installment remains fresh, allowing me to carry my enthusiasm over to the next film. As an audience member, I highly appreciate this timing. This is because, not just in movies but across various media, when the gap before the next release is too long, there are many series I give up following or lose interest in.

Too Many Elements and Diminished Catharsis

To be honest, my impression of "Supergirl," which I had been looking forward to, is that it did not resonate with me all that much. Of course, being a major Hollywood production, I believe it maintains a decent level of quality as entertainment. However, my takeaway was that too many subplots were crammed into the story, leaving it somewhat confusing.

Because the backgrounds of the villain to be defeated and the Asian woman who becomes an ally are only touched upon briefly, I could not invest much emotion into Supergirl's reasons for fighting. Supergirl also teams up with a rugged bounty hunter, but for him, I could only perceive him at first glance as a stereotypical rogue. In the end, regarding the characters other than Supergirl, I could not shake the feeling of, "A lot of characters are appearing, but who on earth are they anyway?"

Under these circumstances, the plot boils down to just the main storyline: Supergirl taking a stand against villainous thugs for the sake of her pet. For that kind of plot, Supergirl struggles strangely hard, making it difficult to gain a sense of catharsis. Furthermore, the connection between Supergirl's inner conflict stemming from her past—which is interspersed throughout the film—and this specific episode failed to strike a chord with me. Since the main character herself is quite appealing, I felt it might have been better to delve deeper into Supergirl herself, without including unnecessary subcharacters.

Reflections on the Middle-Aged Men's Sling Bag Controversy: Recommending a "Mild Demeanor" as the Socially Privileged

The Internet Debate Over "Middle-Aged Men and Ill-Fitting Sling Bags"

Recently, I noticed a commonplace fashion topic online suggesting that sling bags do not look good on middle-aged men. In response, I saw numerous intense backlashes from middle-aged men themselves, arguing along the lines of, "We are socially oppressed because people say all sorts of negative things about our clothing. This is unacceptable."

I am a middle-aged man myself, and I actually use a sling bag. However, my frank impression is that it is not something to react to so excessively.

Other People's Opinions Are Just Subjective with No Real Harm

Even if a third party feels it does not suit you, if you like it, shouldn't you just keep using it? No matter what others think, it does not cause any tangible harm to you.

You cannot stop someone from thinking it looks unflattering, nor has anyone directly ordered you face-to-face not to carry a sling bag. Furthermore, the number of people who actually post comments online saying it looks bad is negligible; in reality, the vast majority of people likely have no interest whatsoever in what middle-aged men wear.

Criticism of Clothing and Appearance Is Not Unique to Middle-Aged Men

In the first place, being criticized about clothing and appearance is by no means limited to middle-aged men. I do not see this as an issue where middle-aged men alone are uniquely persecuted.

For instance, women tend to face far more gossip and direct disparagement regarding their looks on a daily basis. Young people's fashion also frequently becomes a target of criticism from older generations. If anything, it feels as though negative discourse directed at more vulnerable demographics is overlooked all too often. In such a context, it appears as though middle-aged men are reacting with disproportionate intensity.

"Prickly" Reactions and Social Attributes

No one enjoys hearing negative comments, so expressing discomfort is perhaps unavoidable. However, it concerns me that the pushback is strangely aggressive.

Statistically and structurally speaking, middle-aged men occupy a position of social privilege and belong to a demographic that more frequently stands on the side of the perpetrators. Consequently, adopting the stance of a "victim" and behaving in a prickly manner makes it difficult to elicit understanding or empathy from those around them.

Even if something makes you angry, it would likely be more advantageous in the long run to adopt a milder approach. Responding calmly by saying, "For the sake of social good, let us refrain from mocking anyone's appearance or features, regardless of who they are," seems far more appropriate for achieving the goal of wanting to be respected as a member of society.

Choosing to Support the Vulnerable Rather Than Defending One's Position

Personally, as a middle-aged man, I frequently feel that I have been given an unfair advantage or privilege in society so far.

Because of this, rather than desperately trying to protect my own vested interests and standing, I would like to be on the side of supporting those who are in more vulnerable positions. That is how I feel.

Reflections on the Middle-Aged Men's Sling Bag Controversy: Recommending a "Mild Demeanor" as the Socially Privileged.

[Sake] Rich Flavor in a Convenient Size: The Appeal of Kikusui Funaguchi Cans

Introduction

Recently, I purchased a canned sake called "Kikusui Funaguchi" at my local supermarket. It comes in a handy 200ml size and has a rich, sweet flavor that is quite enjoyable.

The Dilemma of Choosing Sake and the Benefits of "Funaguchi"

Since I started drinking sake, I have found myself in a bit of a dilemma. Many of the sakes praised for their taste are not available at regular supermarkets. Even if you can find them at specialty liquor stores, they are mostly sold in four-go bottles (720ml), making it quite a challenge to finish the whole bottle.

In that regard, Kikusui Funaguchi is highly convenient. The volume is small, it is readily available at supermarkets and convenience stores, and being canned, it allows for long-term storage. The taste is also rich and delicious. Although its high alcohol content is a bit of a concern, it can be sipped slowly over time or enjoyed on the rocks to dilute it slightly.

Excellent Cost Performance and Size

For me, finishing a 200ml can in one sitting is difficult, so I split it over about four days. Consequently, the cost performance is not bad at all.

The 200ml Kikusui Funaguchi can is roughly the same size as one-cup sakes or paper-carton sakes that come with a straw. In this size category, Kikumasaune's "Neo Cup" was also relatively to my liking.

Conclusion: A Small Everyday Luxury

Both Kikusui Funaguchi and Kikumasaune Neo Cup are slightly expensive compared to other cup sakes. However, since sake is a luxury item, it is better to drink what you truly enjoy. When considering that it takes three to four days to finish rather than drinking it all in one day, the daily cost is not that significant. I might purchase it again when the opportunity arises.

Encountering a Theatrical Aufguss: Reflections on How We Consume Services

The other day, I came across an aufguss session at a super sento (public bathhouse) I visited. It incorporated short theatrical skits, which felt quite novel, so I decided to write about it on my blog.

Since I visit public bathhouses and saunas fairly often, I occasionally witness the service known as aufguss. This is an act where a person called a "neppashi" (heat-wave master) or an "aufgießer" waves a towel inside the sauna to direct the heated air toward the customers. It heats the body much more intensely than simply sitting in a sauna, making it highly popular among sauna enthusiasts.

First Encounter with a "Show Aufguss"

While I have seen heat-wave masters perform while playing music or engaging in light banter, this was my first time experiencing an aufguss with skits, and I must admit I was taken aback. However, when I looked it up later, I learned that this format is known as a "show aufguss."

During the time I spent at the sauna, two aufguss sessions were held. The first heat-wave master was apparently a well-known professional visiting from another famous establishment. Participating required an extra fee and prior reservation, so I only stole glances from the outside, but it seemed quite lively and well-received.

To be perfectly honest, I initially thought, "Isn't getting the heat wave alone enough for an aufguss? Aren't the skits unnecessary?" However, thinking it wouldn't hurt to try, I decided to participate in the second session.

Turning Daily Life into Comedy: The Performer's Passion

The master for the second session was a staff member at this particular sauna, and no extra fee or reservation was required to join. I was told that he is normally a salaried employee who works at the sauna on weekends as a side job. His skits were based on occurrences within an office environment. He also incorporated performances such as spinning the towel around like pizza dough.

During the performance, which lasted just under 15 minutes, there were several rounds of applause and laughter. At least some of the customers seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, and the heat-wave master was all smiles after it ended. It is likely that he does this job out of a genuine love for aufguss, creating a sense of solidarity among fellow enthusiasts.

As a Consumer: Choosing How to Engage

Personally, my candid impression was that it wasn't particularly entertaining. When it comes to theatrical entertainment, we live in a world where far more amusing content is readily available on television and YouTube, so perhaps my tastes have become overly sophisticated and cynical.

However, I also feel it is inappropriate to look down on a skit performed at a local sauna by comparing it to top-tier entertainment, as it is ultimately a form of amusement within a local community. In other words, it is wrong to criticize local amateur baseball with the mindset of someone watching the Major Leagues. Rather, I feel I should have cheered on the aufguss show as an audience member, with the spirit of someone playing alongside them as a teammate.

Since they are going out of their way to entertain us, making an effort to enjoy it is a better deal for us as consumers of the service, and it is also more respectful toward the performers. If we look at things through a cynical and biased lens, we end up missing out on things we could otherwise enjoy.

Given that I am unlikely to become the kind of passionate enthusiast who can maintain such a positive attitude, I probably won't actively participate in similar show aufgusses in the future. Nevertheless, it was a day that left me contemplating how we ought to carry ourselves as recipients of a service.

During the time I spent at the sauna, two aufguss sessions were held.
The first heat-wave master was apparently a well-known professional visiting from another famous establishment.

To be perfectly honest, I initially thought, "Isn't getting the heat wave alone enough for an aufguss? Aren't the skits unnecessary?"
However, thinking it wouldn't hurt to try, I decided to participate in the second session.
The master for the second session was a staff member at this particular sauna, and no extra fee or reservation was required to join.

Men's Fashion Choices: How Office Wear and Casual Clothes Converge into Safe Colors

Introduction

Men have limited color options for office wear. Combined with my personal feeling that choosing various outfits is a hassle, the colors of my clothes have become quite fixed. It goes something like this: light blue for dress shirts, navy for jackets and trousers, and black for shoes, socks, and belts.

Nobody cares if a middle-aged man wears the exact same colors every day, nor is it particularly unnatural. Unless you have the strong will to consciously vary your colors like a fashionable person does, things naturally converge toward what is easy. I recognize that my current situation is exactly that.

The Functional Beauty of All-Black, Born from Avoiding Hassle

As a matter of fact, I used to own brown shoes in addition to black ones in the past. However, it became too much of a hassle to prepare a matching belt and shoe cream to go with that color, so I eventually settled on black alone. When the colors are fixed, you never have to worry about combinations.

Casual Clothes Heading Toward Safe Standards as Well

What I described above is mainly about work clothes, but my private attire is starting to look similar. For example, I found Hanes long-sleeve T-shirts to be very convenient for casual tops, and I am planning to build a collection of them.

Unlike the office, I feel a bit of resistance to wearing the exact same private clothes every day, so I think I will vary the colors slightly. However, since safe colors like navy, black, white, and gray seem to form the core of the product lineup, even if I buy a few different colors within that range, I think that as long as I wear Hanes T-shirts, my daily outfit will end up being safe and rather unvaried in color.

Men's Fashion Choices: How Office Wear and Casual Clothes Converge into Safe Colors
Men have limited color options for office wear.

First Visit to Isomaru Suisan: Thoughts on a Place Far Better Than Imagined

Introduction

I had been curious about a Japanese izakaya chain called "Isomaru Suisan," but I used to just walk past it all the time. Recently, however, I happened to have the chance to go inside. It turned out to be a much better place than I had imagined from the outside, so I will write about my thoughts on it in this post.

From Momokawa Nigori to Frozen Sake: Enjoying Sake Casual-Style

The drink menu offered a wide variety, but since it is a Japanese-style seafood izakaya, I decided to choose sake. There were several brands available, mostly at reasonable prices, so I ordered "Momokawa Nigori Sake." It was sweet and suited my taste.

Speaking of sweet sake, they also had "Mio," a low-alcohol sparkling sake by Sho Chiku Bai, which might be a good option if you want a light drink. As a unique option, they also offered "Mio Frozen." It is probably a sorbet-like sake, and since it looked interesting, I wish I had given it a try. High-end sake is not available.

Flavor Profile for Drinks and Memorable Dishes

Every dish was delicious. To my palate, the seasoning felt a bit on the stronger side, but that actually stimulated my appetite for drinks, so it might be reasonable for an izakaya flavor profile.

Here are the dishes that left a strong impression. First is the firefly squid prepared like raw liver sashimi (Reba-sashi style), which was featured as a recommendation. For some mysterious reason, despite being squid, it captures the flavor of raw liver.

Another choice is the grilled crab miso in the shell paired with a baguette. This is apparently one of their signature items as well, and it tasted savory and delicious.
